Canterbury to Sheperdswell Pilgrimage Trail | 18km | £8

Journey through the captivating Kentish countryside on this beautiful day pilgrimage from Canterbury to Shepherdswell along the Via Francigena — which leads all the way to Rome.

Meeting at Canterbury West train station at 10:00 am, we’ll grab a coffee and a delicious (take my word for it!) pastry from The Goods Shed next door before heading south through the city and out along the Pilgrim’s Way. We’ll meander gently through countryside, farmland and old-world villages, following in the footsteps of those who made the journey in the Middle Ages.

Once we arrive in the village of Shepherdswell, we can stop for well-earned refreshments — or a pint — at the pub or make our way back to Canterbury via a short train connection.

We’ll have plenty of opportunities to picnic in the picturesque fields along the route, so bring a packed lunch with you. And be sure to carry at least 2 litres of water since refreshment stops will be few, if any, along the way.

This is a moderate hike with some very gentle hills. Hiking boots or very comfortable trainers should be fine. But wear mud-appropriate footwear if it’s been raining. And, as always, be prepared for wet weather on the day!
