Embrace the long summer days with this energising 25km Moved hike from the historic town of Sandwich along the undulating shoreline to Dover. For those who prefer to take on a smaller hike, there’s the option to finish after 10km at Deal.
We’ll meet at the train station in the historic town of Sandwich at 10:00 am and hit the trail right away. Following the Saxon Shore Way through farmland and the occasional golf course, we’ll make our way to the coast, where we’ll continue along this ancient pathway until we reach Deal. Here, roughly 10 km from our start point, people can choose to leave the trail and make their way home or grab a coffee and carry on.
We’ll follow the seafront past quintessential Victorian villas and townhouses, passing Deal Castle and Walmer Castle, where we’ll have plenty of opportunity to stop and have a quick picnic. So please bring a packed lunch with you to save time on the day.
Making our way towards Dover, we’ll pass through pretty St Margaret’s at Cliffe — aptly nestled into the hillside. We may then have the opportunity to grab a quick cuppa at the tearooms before continuing on over the White Cliffs to our final stop in Dover.
This is a moderately challenging hike with some hills to bear in mind. Hiking boots or trail shoes are a good idea. And be prepared for mud if it’s been raining.
As it’s a summer hike, make sure you can carry at least 2 litres of water with you. Bring a packed lunch and some snacks to keep you going. And, as always in unpredictable England, be prepared for wet weather and mud!
