This stunning, long-distance coastal hike begins in the postcard-perfect town of Faversham in Kent and follows the estuary along through marshland, until it meets the sea. This is the perfect coastal hike for those who feel like taking on some miles without any elevation, since it’s a flat trail almost all the way.
Reaching the mouth of the estuary, we’re gifted soul-soothing views out to sea — beautiful in both sunshine or tempestuous weather. Following the England Coastal Path along, we reach the quaint little town of Seasalter, with its cladded, pastel-coloured baches. Shortly after, we arrive in Whitstable — possibly my favourite English seaside town — where we can grab a quick bite before continuing on.
With the sea by our side for the whole journey, we pass through Swalecliffe, Hampton and Herne Bay, making our way gently up onto the clifftops to meet the Roman fortress and towers of Reculver. From here, it’s just a few more kilometres to Birchington-on-Sea, where we can catch the bus to Herne Bay or Canterbury for onward travel to London.
Bring a litre of water and lunch, if you’d like. There are plenty of opportunities to refill water once we reach Whitstable.
OPTIONS TO FINISH EARLY:
Whitstable — buses to Canterbury are regular, as are trains back to London from Canterbury.
Herne Bay — there’s a good train service back to London, direct from Herne Bay.
